Basson impressed with MTC Namibian PGA

THE Namibia Professional Golfers’ Association’s (NPGA) president, Adri Basson, says he was impressed with the standard of competition at the annual MTC

Namibia PGA Championship, which took place in Windhoek over the weekend. The Mobile Telecommunications Limited (MTC) Sunshine Tour championship was held at the Windhoek Country Club golf course, with South African rookie J.G Claassen winning his maiden trophy in his professional career.Basson told Nampa in an interview yesterday that the standard of golf at the event was high, and all 68 golfers who took part were very impressive.’It was fantastic, apart from us having to stop the event every now and then because of the heavy rainfall. Still, we managed to finish and complete the championship,’ he said. He congratulated Claassen on his hard-earned victory, adding that the Namibian championship could in future meet the high qualifying standards for the Asian Tour and the European Tour.On the way forward, Basson said the NPGA wants to negotiate with the main sponsor, MTC, for two upcoming championships – one to be held in Windhoek in October, and another in March next year at Swakopmund. Said Basson: ‘We have that idea, which is not yet finalised. But we hope to revisit the contract. We hope to pronounce ourselves in the next three weeks on the way forward.’MTC has been the main sponsor of the NPGA for the past seven years. The South African carded a superb final-round score of six-under par, 65 for the victory, as he was flawless with his game and looked confident with his putting and hitting. The 20-year-old Claassen had six birdies and no drop shot for the day, as he looked in great shape with his crisp iron shots and smooth putting. He finished the four-day championship with an aggregate score of sixteen-under par, 268. Claassen won the championship by a margin of just one stroke over his compatriot Christiaan Basson. – Nampa
