A FIRST National Bank (FNB) employee is under internal investigation after he was allegedly caught defrauding the Beukes Spar shopping centre in Khomasdal.

Sources indicated to The Namibian that the FNB employee works in the bank’s electronic banking department. One of his duties was apparently to service the speed-point terminal at the shopping centre. The suspect had allegedly been making purchases from the shop using his FNB debit card, only to reverse these payments later on.Beukes Spar manager Elrico Beukes confirmed the incident on Tuesday, adding that the unlawful transactions seemed to date back to at least January this year.He declined to say how much his company had lost, but said the bank had assured him that he would be compensated.Beukes said the alleged culprit was identified after the shop reviewed its bank statements, which revealed the irregularities.FNB spokesperson Cassius Moeti also confirmed the incident yesterday, but declined to comment. The matter was seen as an internal one, Moeti said.He would not say whether the bank had taken any legal steps against the employee.
