Baby perishes in shack fire, man dies in hit and run

A five-day-old baby died in a shack fire at Wanaheda, while a man was killed in a hit-and-run incident at Katutura, among other serious incidents reported by the police over the weekend.

According to the police’s weekend incident report issued on Sunday, the shack fire occurred on Friday around 11h00 at Wanaheda. It is alleged that the baby’s mother left her child sleeping inside while she stood outside talking to housemates when children alerted her that the room was on fire.

The cause of the blaze is unknown and investigations are ongoing.

Benhard Dyagho (40) died on Saturday around 01h40 after being struck by a truck while crossing Hans-Dietrich Genscher Street near Hakahana Service Station.

Police say the driver fled the scene, while a second truck driving behind the first also ran over the victim before speeding off. The first suspect was later arrested, but the second driver is still at large. The deceased’s next of kin are informed.

Other incidents reported in Windhoek include a robbery on Friday night at Brahman Street, Northern Industrial Area, where a Chinese national was attacked by suspects armed with a knife.

“His iPhone 15 Pro Max, valued at N$22 000, was stolen. No arrests have been made,” says the report.

In a separate case the same night, suspects allegedly pulled a moving vehicle’s door open at Shanghai Street, Katutura, and grabbed an iPhone worth N$20 000. No arrests or recoveries have been made.

The police further report that on Sunday morning, a foetus was discovered in a waste bin at Pruim Street, Shandumbala. Investigations are underway.
