THE finalists for the annual Namibia Sport Awards ceremony in Windhoek on October 30 were announced by the Namibia Sport Commission yesterday.
The panel of judges announced five finalists in each category except for the Sportsman of the Year category, where seven finalists were nominated.According to the panel, the level of entries amongst the Sportsman of the Year category were of a very high standard and they felt that all seven finalists should receive recognition for their achievements. The panel of judges consists of Namibia National Olympic Committee member Ailly Hangula Paulino, who is also the chairperson; NNOC member Monica Dahl, sport administrator Callie Schaefer and editor of Namibia Sport magazine Helge Schutz. The level of competition and world ranking played an important role in the evaluation process. The judging panel placed emphasis on the international performance of the individual nominees. A points scoring system was used to evaluate the individual sports achievements on international, inter-continental, regional and national level. ‘The panel evaluated each event in lieu of the number of countries participating at any such event, the ranking of the athlete at that specific event as well as the athlete’s current overall world ranking,’ the panel said in a statement. The Awards ceremony will be sponsored by MTC, who’s representative, Isack Hamata, added that they would also offer a Sport Journalist of the Year award at the occasion.
