Chevening scholarships are the UK government’s global scholarship programme funded by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) and partner organisations. The programme gives awards to outstanding students with leadership potential from around the world to study postgraduate courses at UK universities. The current Chevening online application cycle for Namibia opened on 7 August and will close on 7 November.

Recently the British High Commission held its pre-departure event for eight Namibian scholars taking up their postgraduate studies in the UK in the coming weeks.

“All eight Namibians are going to the UK under the prestigious Chevening scholarship programme. One scholar is jointly funded by Chevening and the Petroleum Training and Education Fund,” read a press statement issued by Chevening Namibia.

Awards in Namibia are typically for a one-year Masters degree with priority given to those who wish to study in areas such as trade, human rights, governance, media and climate change at any of the UK’s leading universities.

The Chevening scholarship programme covers university tuition fees, a monthly stipend, travel costs to and from the UK, an arrival allowance, a homeward departure allowance, the cost of one visa application and a travel grant to attend Chevening events in the UK.

Speaking to YouthPaper, manger for Old Mutual’s transformation and communication Ilke Akwenye revealed that the Old Mutual and Nedbank Namibia Education Trust came to an end last year, however the existing students who have been granted bursaries will still be covered until the completion of their studies, with all necessary requirements to be met.

“We can confidently say that Old Mutual will continue to fund bursaries for Namibian students studying locally and abroad through its new scheme which will still cater for previously disadvantaged Namibians who need financial assistance,” said Akwenye. The bursary will continue to fund students studying on a part-time or full-time basis for a first time undergraduate degree at an accredited higher education institution within the SADC region.

The bursary will cover registration, tuition and examination fees payable directly to the higher institutions. In addition prescribed books, approved study material, full board and lodging fees and travel allowance will be granted to enable the best environment for each awarded student to deliver to the best of their abilities. The bursary does not have to be paid back.
