As winter closes in, rains start to fade

COLD weather can be expected in Namibia from now on – especially in the mornings, late afternoons and at night – as winter draws nearer.

Weather forecaster Victor Kaurimuje said yesterday that there was not much chance of rainfall now as Namibia was in its transitional period to winter. “The sun has now moved to the Northern Hemisphere.I think every Namibian is aware of that,” Kaurimuje told The Namibian. He said a 40 per cent chance for rainfall could be expected in the North while in the central region there was only a 20 per cent chance. He said the rainy season was approaching its end.Yesterday morning, only Rundu and the Hosea Kutako International Airport, outside the capital, received a few drops of rain.Meanwhile, the level of the Von Bach Dam that provides water to much of central Namibia, including Windhoek, shows a healthy improvement on last year: 50,2 per cent.At the same time last season it was only 29,5 per cent, according to NamWater’s weekly dam bulletin. The Goreangab Dam on the outskirts of Windhoek is officially 100,8 per cent full compared to 58,6 last season. The Hardap Dam outside Mariental, in the Karas Region, has dropped to 50,8 per cent compared to last season’s 54,5 per cent.”The sun has now moved to the Northern Hemisphere.I think every Namibian is aware of that,” Kaurimuje told The Namibian. The Hardap Dam outside Mariental, in the Karas Region, has dropped to 50,8 per cent compared to last season’s 54,5 per cent.
