Army training centres open at Grootfontein

THE Minister of Defence, Nahas Angula, on Friday officially inaugurated the newly built army technical training centre at Grootfontein military base.

The occasion coincided with the handing over of another newly completed technical training centre for the Namibian Air Force at the same military base.

Symbolically receiving the training centre on behalf of government from the general manager of the Namibian Aviation Training Academy Nata, Bethuel Mujetenga, Angula expressed his gratitude to see such institutions on Namibian soil.

The minister said the two events were a clear testimony that the Namibian Defence Force’s army and air force services are busy investing resources in technical training activities.

He further stated that the two technical training centres will make it possible for many young Namibians to be trained as technicians and mechanics of warfare machinery and military equipment.

He assured the military personnel present that much of the needed resources for the successful running of the centres will be forthcoming from government.

The minister also thanked a team of German military experts and Nata members who assist the force in maintaining high international standards at the training centres.

Angula then symbolically handed over the same air force technical training centre, upon receipt, to the chief of the Namibian Defence Force, Lieutenant-General John Mutwa, at the same occasion.

The army commander, Major-General Tomas Hamunyela said the establishment of this facility started in 2011, stating that the centre will offer courses in the mechanical and electrical configurations of armaments – military weapons and equipment – to soldiers. This will enable them to assemble and repair broken machines and equipment.

The defence deputy minister, Petrus Iilonga and air force commander, Air Vice Marshal Martin Pinehas also attended the event. – Nampa
