Hardap governor Salomon April has warned inhabitants of the region against participating in criminal activities.
April said this on Monday during his state of region address at Mariental.
“I would like to extend a stern warning that the full wrath of the law will be applied. The Hardap region hosts tourists from around the globe and farmers who are contributing immensely to the local economy, hence inhabitants should shy away from barbaric behaviours such as rape, gender-based violence, theft and the possession of or dealing in dangerous drugs and substances. You must stop,” he said.
April said crime is exacerbated by alcohol and drug abuse, and escalating poverty caused by unemployment.
He said crime has increased by 4,6%, compared to the rate in the 2021/22 financial year.
A total of 4 730 criminal cases were reported in the region, he said.
Rehoboth reported the highest number of cases, with 2 378, while Sesriem reported the lowest number of cases, with eight.
Murder (24 cases), rape (48 cases), culpable homicide (12 cases), suicide or unnatural deaths (44 cases) , possession of or dealing in prohibited drugs or substances (100 cases) and stock theft (292 cases) were among the most common crimes committed in the region.
The number of rape cases has drastically decreased to 48, compared to 318 cases reported in 2021/22, April said.
An increase in the value of drugs confiscated was reported, which amounts to N$4 765 880, compared to N$402 740 in 2021/22.
This includes 31 599kg of cannabis with a value of N$336 440, 40 487kg skunk cannabis valued at N$3 851 010, 4 638 mandrax tablets worth N$573 430, and 37 units of crack cocaine valued at N$5 000.
