Anton Lubowski memorial lecture returns to Namibia

The family of the late Namibian liberation figure and anti-apartheid activist Anton Lubowski has announced that this year’s Anton Lubowski Memorial Lecture (ALML) will be held in Namibia.

The announcement comes ahead of the 36th anniversary of Lubowski’s assassination on 12 September 1989.

“This picture was taken on 13 September 1989. One day after our world fell apart,” says Gabrielle Lubowski, the late activist’s widow, reflecting on a photo of Lubowski, herself and former president Hage Geingob soon after her husband’s assassination.

“Anton Lubowski was brutally and callously gunned down in front of our residence. I received the phone call at 20h40. Ten days before the return of myself and our children, Almo and Nadia, to Windhoek for the September school holidays,” she says.

The lecture will honour Lubowski’s enduring legacy as the first white member of Swapo to be assassinated by apartheid forces, and will serve as a space for critical reflection on justice, reconciliation, and the unfinished business of Namibia’s liberation struggle.
