Another theft rocks NamPost

A NAMPOST employee is out on bail of N$5 000 after she allegedly stole close to N$90 000 from the Klein Aub post office.

Linda Fisch was arrested at the village on Friday. It is understood that she initially claimed that the money was stolen during an armed robbery at the post office, where she was a clerk.According to a Police officer at Rehoboth, it later emerged that NamPost money had been transferred into someone’s bank account. This led to Fisch’s arrest.Police investigations continue. The acting NamPost spokesperson, Regina Kahorongo, yesterday said she was not aware of the incident. In October last year, the national postal service announced that it had launched an internal investigation to try and establish exactly how much money is lost to staff theft countrywide. At that stage, at least four post offices were suspected to have been looted by insiders. These are at Khorixas, Omaruru, Gibeon and Kalkrand. Following Friday’s arrest at Klein Aub, the number is now at least five.NamPost spokesperson Harold Akwenye said in October last year that the case of former Khorixas postmaster Belinda Xoagus was just the latest in a series of alleged thefts at NamPost.Xoagus, who was arrested by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) late last year, was dismissed after a disciplinary hearing.Akwenye said a post office clerk at Omaruru, Engelhartine Somaes, was fired after financial irregularities were discovered there. Two clerks at Kalkrand and Gibeon – Gwen van Staden and Gwen Fredericks – were also sacked after alleged fraud was uncovered at their post offices.
