Angolan citizen robbed of N$70 000 on bus

A 38-YEAR-OLD Angolan national travelling from Oshikango to Windhoek was allegedly robbed of N$70 000 yesterday near Ongha in the Ohangwena region.

The incident happened yesterday while the Angolan national was travelling on a Silas Ndapuka Business Transport bus.

According to the Namibian Police spokesperson in the Ohangwena region, inspector Kaume Itumba, the incident took place at 13h00 near Ongha in the Ohangwena region next to the main road between Onhuno and Ondangwa.

Itumba said four unknown men, driving a white Honda Fit sedan registration N 181 ND, stopped the bus as if they were looking for a hike to Windhoek.

“When the bus stopped, the suspects pepper-sprayed the driver in the face and got onto the bus… they then approached the Angolan national and started punching him and grabbed his handbag that was carrying N$70 000 cash.

“They also took away the bus keys and drove off in their sedan towards Ondangwa,” Itumba said.

The Angolan national had allegedly collected the money from his family, who had travelled from Angola to meet him at the Oshikango border post.

The money was allegedly going towards paying medical expenses for a child in the family, who went to South Africa for an operation.

Itumba further said yesterday morning the victim visited four local banks, Bank Windhoek Nedbank, Standard Bank and First National Bank, to exchange the currency from Namibia dollars to South Africa rand.

Thereafter, he and other passengers boarded the Silas Ndapuka Business Transport bus to Windhoek.

Itumba said the suspects are unknown, no arrest has been made so far, and nothing has been recovered yet.
