Affirmative Repositioning leader Job Amupanda has commended the Katima Mulilo Town Council for proposing to rename four streets after local leaders whose contributions have had a lasting impact on public service and national development.
During a council ordinary meeting earlier this month, Katima mayor Kabende Kabende proposed that four streets in town be renamed after Richard Kamwi, justice Sylvester Mainga, liberation hero Judea Lyamboloma, and former Miss Namibia Happy Ntelamo.
He proposed that Hospital Street be named after Kamwi, Soweto Street after Mainga, and Dr Silindila Mwiya Street be reverted to its original name, Judea Lyamboloma Street.
He added that the street from Total Kamunu to the corner at Greenwell Matongo Primary School would be named after Ntelamo.
Kabende said renaming these streets after these figures aligns key public institutions with names that reflect their functions and heritage.
Amupanda on Tuesday stated that the proposal to rename the streets shows the council’s commitment to preserving and conserving local heritage.
“Well done to the mayor and council for honouring justice Mainga and Kamwi. Heritage preservation and conservation must continue. Decolonisation is a must,” he said.
Namibian Lives Matter movement chairperson Sinvula Mudabeti also praises the town council, saying it shows due consideration for the work done by these individuals from the Zambezi region who served on the national stage.
“It also reflects ethnic balance,” he states.
