Amukwiyu suspends Oniipa mayor

Augustus Nangolo

SWAPO coordinator for the Oshikoto region Armas Amukwiyu has suspended the mayor of Oniipa, Augustus Nangolo.

Nangolo was notified of his suspension in a letter from Amukwiyu on Tuesday this week for allegedly supporting an opposition party in competition with Swapo.

Nangolo, also a Swapo councillor, was elected as mayor of Oniipa last year. He reportedly nominated councillor Patemoshela Nakanyala from the Independent Patriots for Change (IPC) as deputy mayor.

“With immediate effect, you are directed to suspend all party activities in and or around Oniipa district and beyond,” Amukwiyu said.

Amukwiyu also told the mayor not to contact the Oniipa Town Council, its chief executive or any Swapo councillors regarding council related matters.

Nangolo confirmed his suspension to The Namibian but said only the minister of urban and rural development has the power to suspend him.

He said his suspension was “a personal matter” and was “null and void”.

Amukwiyu did not answer calls to his mobile phone when The Namibian contacted him on Wednesday.
