Amazonkies The New Kids On The Block

Ongwediva-based Afro-pop and kwaito group Amazonkies sat down with to share the process of making their debut album as they reflect on the future of their music…

Developing Momentum

Amazonkies is made up of three members – Starking, Tommy and Ferry, who is the lead singer. The group initially started with six people but members had different goals and visions along the way and as a result, some left.

“We met in school and we started off as dancers before we became fully fledged musicians but by the time we recorded the album we were four. Unfortunately another member recently left the group for some reason that we cannot share at the moment. But we are still good friends,” said Ferry.

He said at the moment the group is focused on promoting their album but at the same time they have also been making time to be in the studio for their next project.

“We want to be the best kwaito and Afro-pop group, not just in the north but the entire country and to attain this, we must work hard. That is why we have already started working on our second album even though our first album is only picking up momentum now.”

On the release of their album titled ‘Tolika,’ Tommy explained that the album narrates the story of a guy who overspends on women and wakes up the next day without any money.

Ferry added that the album is all about motivating young people to never give up pursuing their dreams. “This album was inspired by our struggles and we feel a lot of people will relate to the content, that is why the album is not just made up of party songs but motivational songs as well,” said Tommy.

In the group every member has a role to play. Starking is the choreographer, while Ferry is the sound manager who oversees sound quality in the studio as well as during performances and Tommy is tasked with the duty to market the music.

“We do not have a manager, that is why we have to do everything by ourselves. We are also not signed under any record label but we are working on establishing our own label called Kalawa Bloma Entertainment,” said Tommy.

On unity and collaboration opportunities among artists in the Namibian music arena, the group is content that artists are now working together more and are open to work with each other.

“Namibian artists are united more than ever now, this is evident by the number of features we have on our album and veteran musicians are also keen to work with upcoming artists which is very good to see. We just recently worked with Ees and the song will probably be the first single off our sophomore album,” revealed Tommy.
