Volkswagen has expanded its Amarok PanAmericana range in Namibia with the arrival of a petrol-powered variant that delivers more performance than many would expect.
The perception among bakkie enthusiasts has long been that the Amarok PanAmericana 3.0-litre V6 diesel, producing 184 kW, is the definitive model.
However, despite its smaller engine, the new 2.3-litre TSI four-cylinder petrol version offers impressive performance and a higher level of specification than anticipated.
There was initial surprise when Autohaus Windhoek confirmed that the latest PanAmericana is powered by a 2.3 TSI 4Motion engine rather than the familiar 3.0 V6.
According to the dealership’s sales team member Chad Wright, advances in automotive engineering mean smaller engines are now delivering greater performance.
The petrol Amarok produces 452Nm of torque, paired with a 10-speed automatic gearbox.
It is capable of reaching a top speed of 240km/h on the speedometer and accelerates from 0 to 100km/h in 7.6 seconds.
The vehicle’s road holding stands out, with stable and confident handling even at higher speeds.
The exterior retains the Amarok’s distinctive lines and imposing size, but the PanAmericana petrol can be identified by details such as the black 18-inch Amadora alloy wheels, IQ Light LED matrix headlights and a sport bar.
Inside, the two-tone ‘cricket’ leather seats add to the premium feel expected of a flagship model.
A 12-inch infotainment system provides access to navigation, media and hands-free phone functions, while the 12.3-inch digital cockpit displays key driving information, including speed, distance travelled, fuel economy, engine data and outside temperature.
Fuel consumption is listed at around 9.7 to 9.9 litres per 100km.
Driver comfort is enhanced by a multi-functional leather-clad steering wheel with integrated cruise control, audio and hands-free controls.
An automatic safety feature engages park mode if the driver stops and forgets to select ‘P’. Although its refined appearance may suggest otherwise, the Amarok PanAmericana remains highly capable off-road.
It offers multiple driving modes, including 2H, 4H, 4L and 4-auto, as well as a rear differential lock for uneven terrain.
The vehicle has a wading depth of 800mm, ground clearance of 235mm and a departure angle of 26 degrees, making it well suited to Namibia’s varied landscapes.
Safety features include a 360-degree camera, park assist, adaptive cruise control, lane assist and seven airbags.
Wright says the decision to introduce a petrol-powered flagship was aimed at a specific market segment.
“You always get those petrol heads looking for a different kind of performance.
Many think a bakkie must always have a diesel engine, but for those who want a petrol vehicle that can go anywhere, this is the bakkie,” he says.
The Amarok PanAmericana petrol positions itself as a blend of luxury, performance and off-road capability, appealing to drivers ranging from young executives to enthusiasts looking to make a statement on and off the road.
