All Roads Lead To… The Garden Café

Ferreira’s Nursery is truly some untapped tranquility.

Blooming beautifully on Maxwell Street in a burst of countless flowers and ferns, for those not overly intent on gardening but charmed by nature nevertheless, Ferreira’s offers a scenic prelude to The Garden Café.

A homespun, sisterly spot that takes inspiration from the nursery’s blossoms in its quaint floral table cloths and rustic aesthetic while serving up the sweet, the comforting and the homemade.

Managed by sisters Katja Diener and Carmen Eberhardt, The Garden Café is as family-orientated as it is friendly.

Non-alcoholic and with a sunny playground for the children, on an easy Monday morning, the eatery enjoys a slow trickle of ladies who lunch, mothers and daughters and even Black Vulcanite’s Okin walks in with brother in tow proclaiming: “This place has really good breakfasts!”

Breakfast it is, then.

On recommendation and because it’s a short while after 10h00. French toast with caramelised banana, bacon, cheese and syrup which arrives quick, clean and tasty amongst a breakfast menu that includes flapjacks, a breakfast burger and burger wrap with babalas bread (two-minute steak, fried eggs, bacons, onions, tomato, cheese, cheese sauce and chips) winking from their open sandwiches selection.

Also offering a daily special, which last Monday was a hearty helping of goulash with rice and butternut, The Garden Café is a place of homemade cakes, oat muffins, mango-peach jam, assorted pickles and friendly service.

Quiet, no fuss, frills and away from the hustle and bustle, this little getaway is the perfect perch in which to read a book or the newspaper, catch some rays and enjoy a wholesome afternoon.

Head here for a touch of the farm style life, a stroll through the nursery and a light bite of something yum.
