All Roads Lead To … Papa G’s Chicken

There is nothing worse than craving a juicy piece of chicken and having to settle for a damn dry piece. One you have to use all your effort and the muscles in your throat, neck and sometimes even your shoulders just to swallow! At times you’re even forced to take a sip of something – anything – to wash down that piece of chicken.

Happily, Papa G’s Chicken gives the term ‘succulent, juicy chicken’ a whole new meaning.

The first time I had their chicken, I was on my way to have kapana at Single Quarters in Katutura and thought about trying something new. A decision I will never ever regret. Being used to my quarter chicken leg from Nando’s, I ordered the same for N$20 at Papa G’s.

My piece is cut from the whole chicken and placed on the grill in front of me. The guy serving takes a bottle of some delicious looking sauce and brushes my chicken with it. Not even this delicious sight can prepare me for the heavenly taste I am about to experience at first bite.

A combination of sweet, sour and lemon flavours burst in my mouth and for a few seconds, I have to hold my breath as I try to understand how on this blue and green earth, chicken can taste this good.

Attempting to understand just how Papa G gets his chicken so succulent and tasty, I enquire what exactly they use in the sauce. Readily, he tells me they use a combination of lemon and herbs and… well, the rest is a secret. Damn, there I was making notes in my head and planning my next cooking session…

If you’re in the mood for a quick food run or a quick standing meal, Papa G’s is the perfect place. Sometimes one is not in the mood to go Nando’s, KFC or some other outlet to stand in lines and wait a year and a day for your food. Sometimes you just want to have a piece of chicken, while standing in the sun.

The food-truck is designed in such a way that it goes from being a big red box to a spot that allows for enough shade in the front and tables at the back, so whether you want to have your meal seated or standing, you are catered for.

From time to time they have the Papa G’s noodle salad and chicken liver salad, which sells for N$10 a tub and some roosterbrood for N$5 to go with the chicken.

They can however work on having these extras readily available at all times because going for a food run at 13h00 on a Monday afternoon and not having the option of beverages, besides Supermalt, is totally unacceptable.

Papa G sells his appetising chicken for N$40 for half a chicken and N$80 for the full bird. They are open until as late as midnight, seven days a week including public holidays.

They are situated on the roadside along Shanghai street in Katutura. The big red food truck. You cannot miss it!
