All Roads Lead To… Op My Stoep Lodge

Op My Stoep Lodge is one of those places that everyone calls their favourite restaurant. Situated about seven kilometres from Oranjemund, it’s a lovely spot where locals and tourists hang out before they either go to South Africa or travel deeper into Namibia.

It’s my home for a couple of days during my visit to the area and as I enter the restaurant, I’m impressed by the decor which involves a whole lot of number plates stuck to the wall. Heading further into the restaurant’s main area, you’ll find neat trinkets like hats, caps and other bits and pieces of memorabilia hung all over the roof.

It’s a clear indication that this place has been visited by many people over the years.

It’s easy to feel at home here.

The owner of the lodge, Fanie Smit, and the waitresses make sure of that, and cater to your every need. I’m early (since the restaurant opens at 17h30) and I settle in to do some people-watching.

My order includes a delicious tortilla dripping with sauce and mince. I couldn’t be more impressed. And that was just for starters. The second thing in store for me was a huge chicken schnitzel. Because who doesn’t love chicken schnitzels? Also, it’s one of the less fishy things on the menu.

Some of the favourites include the saucy espetada (cubes of rump, sirloin or chicken hung on a skewer, which was a popular choice that day), Pampas Argentinian steak, escargot steak, or even a schnitzel supreme in either pork or chicken.

But if a fish dish is your thing, try out the prawns and mussels in white wine sauce. It’s amazing, so I hear.

On the other hand, when you’re not in the mood for something meaty – try out their pizzas which will guarantee you a full stomach, and an appetite for more in a couple of days.

The prices aren’t bad, and it’s a great place to hang out with the family before driving back out or heading to your hotel room. Do make a stop if you’re in the area.
