All Roads Lead To… Gross Barmen Resort Restaurant

Gross Barmen Resort is a breath of fresh air. The popular destination located about 100km from the capital city is nestled on the banks of a tributary of the Swakop River, and is open throughout the year.

Walking into the on-site restaurant is a memorable experience. The outside beauty – the river view, palm trees and green lawn – are breathtaking, and once you enter the restaurant, you’re welcomed by equally beautiful smiles from the friendly waitstaff.

As we made our way to our table, I couldn’t help but admire the modern decor and revel in the cool breeze from the air-conditioning, a must in the scorching Namibian summers.

The art on the walls beautifully completes the look.

Browsing the menu, I was amazed by the affordable prices. It’s a shame that not much creativity has gone into the design, though. Compared to menus from other restaurants, there’s a lot to be desired.

A lack of knowledge about the menu is often a concern at many Namibian restaurants, but not here. The waiters impressed. Customers can ask anything and they will confidently respond with a smile. “When I asked something about a certain meal, the waiter was able to clearly explain it to me. She also advised us on the best meals. This is what I want to see at all restaurants. Many waiters are clueless when it comes to the menu,” client Viola de Klerk said.

The restaurant serves several yummy meals from starters, salads and fish to steak, pasta and dessert.

Another client, Stacey Katuuo, said the salmon starter was the best she ever had. “This is something that I will never forget. I was blown away from the moment I laid my eyes on it until my last bite.”

Katuuo, who is a cocktail fan, said she was impressed by the menu and the variety offered. “The prices are affordable from N$60 to N$90, and the service was fast.”

After eating at the restaurant, the obvious choice is to explore the beauty of the resort. The main attractions are the hot mineral springs and the open-air swimming pool, making Gross Barmen a destination many can’t get enough of.
