When you hear the words gluten-free, dairy-free or vegan, chances are your taste buds get good and ready to initiate a revolt. Anticipating bland, boring, awful imitations of the finer ingredients in life, those three phrases can be death to any hope of satisfaction, appealing texture or flavour.
Enter Elzaan Nel, the woman behind Bread n Butter.
Supplying the gorgeous chocolate ganache tartlets, gluten free, Banting friendly quiches, vegan chocolate cake and sweet potato peanut butter brownies winking from sparkling displays at Klara’s Market Place and Fika Coffee Bar, Bread n Butter is the brain child of the passionate foodie and chef who has spent the last year building her business out of sheer necessity.
“Bread n Butter is a one-woman show (for now) started almost a year ago, after a previous opportunity did not work out,” says the entrepreneur. “I was looking for a job for more than a month and couldn’t find anything I was satisfied with. I had no other choice but to start my own thing, hence the name.”
A fussy eater hustling for her own bread and butter and agreeing that often baking, let alone eating, gluten free and vegan food is not the easiest or tastiest gig in the game, Nel is always striving to improve both the texture and the flavour of her baked goods.
“I always try to use organic and locally sourced ingredients. A lot of the time it’s not possible and I find the healthiest alternatives,” she says, adding that a lot has changed in health foods and products in Namibia in the last few years.
“For example, the gluten free flour we had in shops five years ago was really tasteless. The products have really improved, thus making using the products a lot easier,” she says.
“I believe most people can bake healthy once they know how. I found my passion in baking this way and really hope that more healthy, organic places will open in Namibia soon.”
Currently supplying Klara’s and Fika after recently ending her office delivery service to focus on catering and two exciting new ventures, Bread n Butter – gluten free and vegan as it is – will certainly catch your eye… and convert your taste buds.
