All Roads Lead To… Bonsai Bistro

Windhoek’s Newest Health Food Hub

From the health conscious mind that brought us Bread n Butter comes Bonsai Bistro. A nutritious little nook situated at Elysium Fields at 40 Berg Street in Klein Windhoek.

Welcoming gym bros, yogis and women in the thick of Veganuary on a sunny Monday morning, Windhoek’s newest little health spot is abuzz with inquiry and praise for the new venture lobbied from its bright green patio tables or from within its clean, minimalist interior.

“This is just what Windhoek needs!”

“What’s in the green juice?”

“Are you sure these brownies are healthy?”

Made from sweet potato, almonds and gluten free oats, the brownies certainly pass muster and seem to encapsulate Bonsai Bistro’s whole deal.

Health food that tastes good, doesn’t break the bank and encourages Namibians to try something new.

“There’s definitely a market for gluten free, dairy free and low sugar in Windhoek. It is very small at the moment but we are trying to push it and make people aware of eating differently without sacrificing flavour and good taste,” says Bonsai Bistro’s Elzaan Nel, whose dream has come true in the opening of her eatery after cooking from home and supplying nosh to the likes of Klara’s Market and @E.A.T.

“I am a fussy eater. If something doesn’t taste nice, I’m not gonna eat it. Especially if you tell me it’s healthy and it tastes horrible. Today, we have a vegetarian Mexican bowl and we incorporate the same flavours as those in the meat option so we still get the great taste with the added benefits.”

Eager to reel in all kinds of Namibians in the hopes that the wealth of salted caramel and chocolate smoothies, high fibre snack bars, vegan and non-vegan wraps, salad bowls, freshly squeezed juices, bran muffins, gluten free ganache tarts, revolving cake and bowls of the day catch their unsuspecting eye, Bonsai Bistro does have a modest (though mostly ignored!) selection of brotchens amidst their gluten free quiche and ginger and turmeric energy balls.

“Turmeric is very good for your gut,” says Nel. “I always try and bring a healthy element into the sweet stuff.”

Also upping the health ante on their Deluxe Coffeeworks coffee, Bonsai Bistro gives patrons the option of almond milk in their cappuccinos and lattes while selling the beans in-house.

Just under two weeks old, passionate about employing women and the environment (return your glass bottles for a N$5 bistro credit and pass on the bio straws), Bonsai Bistro is up, at it and excited to welcome the health conscious and the curious to a spot that’s friendly, tasty and a dream.
