‘Alita: Battle Angel’ is ace with effects

A discarded cyborg becomes an unwitting hero in ‘Alita: Battle Angel’ (2019).

Robert Rodriguez’s cyberpunk action extravaganza based on the ‘Gunnm’ manga series by Yukito Kishiro.

Set in the year 2563 where a catastrophic war has reduced the world to the cut-throat Iron City below and the affluent sky city of Zalem above, the film finds its title character torn apart on a junk heap and unable to remember who she is.

Rebuilt by doctor slash hunter warrior Dr Dyson Ido (Christoph Waltz), Alita rediscovers this world of shadowy villains, ruthless bounty hunters and Motorball fever with her massive manga eyes before an attack activates her latent abilities to kick some serious ass.

Visually stunning and presenting a refreshingly immersive world where the action keeps you on the edge despite some issues with a clunky script, ‘Alita: Battle Angel’ shows off its CGI to incredible effect.

With actress Rosa Salazar starring in a motion capture feat that gives life to Alita’s mesmeric eyes, the film boasts an A-list ensemble including Jennifer Connelly, Mahershala Ali as well as Ed Skrein and Keean Johnson as Hugo.

Dive into this to marvel at the technology and stay tuned for an exciting reveal teasing an intriguing sequel.
