Aid workers in Sudan freed

NAIROBI – Rebels in Sudan’s troubled western region of Darfur yesterday freed 16 aid workers they had abducted three days earlier, the UN said, condemning their detention.

“We are relieved to report that the 16 humanitarian aid workers who had been detained by the Sudan Liberation Movement/Army were released today (Sunday) and have returned safely to their base in El Fasher, North Darfur,” the UN’s acting humanitarian coordinator for Sudan, Kevin Kennedy, said in a statement. Contrary to reports that the 16 had been abducted Saturday, another UN statement said they were taken by the rebels on Thursday.”The group includes workers from UN agencies, non-governmental organisations, and donors,” the statement said.- Nampa-AFPContrary to reports that the 16 had been abducted Saturday, another UN statement said they were taken by the rebels on Thursday.”The group includes workers from UN agencies, non-governmental organisations, and donors,” the statement said.- Nampa-AFP
