The Namibia Agronomic Board on Thursday honoured excelling farmers at the 2023 National Agronomy and Horticulture Awards ceremony held at Mashare Blueberries Green Scheme in the Kavango East region.

Namibia Agronomic Board members and other stakeholders attended the event under the theme “Promoting a Resilient, Sustainable and Profitable Crop Industry”.
Forty-two winners were honoured for their hard work and innovative ways in agronomy and horticulture.

NAB’s chief executive officer, Fidelis Mwazi, said the agronomic board is an industry-driven organisation to promote the agronomic industry and facilitate production.

He said the NAB values the awards because it enables the organisation to bring all stakeholders and all role players in the industry together to celebrate annually.

Avagro Sustainable Agriculture Solutions scooped the master crop value chair actor award and the best horticulture innovator/producer of the year award, walking away with N$60 000 cash vouchers.

The founder of Avagro, Leanie Harmann, said:
“We didn’t expect it, coming all the long way from the coast, from Swakopmund, with this amazing team. We are absolutely excited that we can be part of this journey of Namibia becoming a leading horticulture producer in the southern Africa region.”

Aina Imalwa, winner of the best horticulture youth producer of the year, said she will invest her prize money back into her garden at the Etunda Irrigation Scheme in Omusati.

Imalwa said she wants to use farming to inspire the youth to join the industry.
