The president of the Namibia Agricultural Union, Thinus Pretorius, says founding president Sam Nujoma’s leadership was instrumental in transforming Namibia into a prosperous and peaceful nation.
In a tribute statement, Pretorius said Nujoma’s death last weekend at the age of 95 marks the end of an era in Namibia’s history.
Pretorius quoted Nujoma’s independence speech on 21 March 1990: “He spoke with pride, declaring: ‘We are gathered here today, not to pass yet another resolution, but to celebrate the dawn of a new era in this land and to proclaim to the world that a new star has risen on the African continent’.”
He said Nujoma’s words proclaimed the birth of a democratic Namibia, one where the collective future of the people was firmly in their own hands.
“His call for unity, equality and justice became the foundation of our national identity,” said the veteran Otjiwarongo farmer.
He said Nujoma reminded the nation that independence had brought with it the responsibility to build a future based on peace, prosperity and opportunity for all Namibians, irrespective of race, religion or gender.
“Under his leadership, Namibia embraced Vision 2030 – a vision that aimed to elevate the quality of life for all Namibians and to position the country among the developed nations of the world by 2030.
“His vision focused on sustainable development, education, science and technology, gender equality and the advancement of social justice, laying the foundation for a united and vibrant nation.”
He said Nujoma also fought for national reconciliation and restoring friendly relations among all the people of Namibia and forging a sense of common purpose.
“His policy of national reconciliation set the stage for the peaceful and democratic society that we continue to build today,” said the union president.
Pretorius said Nujoma’s legacy extends beyond political and economic achievements as he was deeply committed to social justice, particularly in the areas of gender equality and child welfare.
“As we reflect on his presidency, we are reminded of his call to look forward with confidence and hope. We shall carry forward his legacy by striving for a Namibia where prosperity, harmony and opportunity are accessible to all.
“On behalf of the Namibia Agricultural Union, we extend our heartfelt condolences to his family and to the many friends he made throughout his extraordinary life,” said Pretorius.
