Agriculture ministry declares cockroach killer illegal

The Ministry of Agriculture, Water and Land Reform (MAWLR) has declared the widely-sold unregistered insecticide dichlorvos, commonly known as Boam, illegal.

The product is popularly used as a cockroach killer in households.

It is sold mainly at open markets and online.

In a statement the executive director Ndiyakupi Nghituwamata said the product is hazardous and poses a danger to humans.

The insecticide is not registered for use in Namibia.

“This means that anyone – retailer or vendor – found selling or in possession of Boam, may face legal consequences, as stipulated under the Fertilisers, Farm Seeds, Agricultural Remedies and Stock Remedies Act 36 of 1947,” said Nghituwamata.

She advised the public to refrain from using or storing Boam.

Nghituwamata has urged members of the public to report and surrender the insecticide to the nearest MAWLR offices countrywide.
