Agribank Namibia chief executive officer (CEO) Raphael Karuaihe has announced that he will vie to represent the Otjinene constituency in the Omaheke region as a councillor for Swapo.
Karuaihe says he is not new to politics, with his political journey starting as one of the founders of the Namibia National Students Organisation in the 1980s. He also served as president of the University of Namibia Student Representative Council in 1993.
“I grew up in politics. I’m not new to this space. Now that I’ve come full circle, I want to use my skills to serve my community,” he says.
Karuaihe took over the role of Agribank CEO in January 2022. He previously served as head of commodities at the Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE) in South Africa, where he had been working since 2012.
The seasoned economist and agribusiness expert believes the role of councillor is a natural return to his roots. He says while the position is often underestimated, it is the foundation of democracy.
“This role is about listening, consulting, and delivering on what matters most to the people. If chosen, my focus will be practical solutions that change lives at Otjinene.”
MATTER OF FACT: In Wednesday’s edition, we published an article in which we referred to Raphael Karuaihe as the former CEO of Agribank. Karuaihe is in fact still the CEO, a position he took up in 2022. We regret the error.
