THE 2016 All Africa Music Award that she received on Sunday is not just a big achievement for herself as an artist, but also for other female artists in the country, Sally Boss Madam said.
Speaking to The Namibian yesterday, Sally still seemed high from the good news that she was crowned queen of music in southern Africa. Sally walked away with the Best Female Artist: Southern Africa for her hit song ‘Natural’. She was up against heavy competition from the likes of Lira (South Africa), Lizha James (Mozambique) as well as Zahara (South Africa).
“Something like this is not just for me but for Namibians as a whole. I am happy that I could make the country proud and once again, the country and Africa made me proud with their votes,” she said.
Sally continued that this accomplishment also means a lot for Namibian musicians. “It means everything for other female artists as well and it has been a long time since Namibians have been getting recognition from big awards.” Sally has been enjoying continental recognition with her hit songs ‘Natural’ and ‘Bim Bim’ which features South African singer Busiswa. Both songs have been enjoying major airplay on the recently-launched Trace Africa music channel on DStv, with ‘Natural’ going to the number spot on the channel’s countdown.
“It means a lot to us as female artists and also Namibian artists in general. Sally is flying the Namibian flag high and we are very proud of what she is doing,” said Lize Ehlers, who applauded Sally for all that she is doing for the music industry.
Sally is the only Namibian who was nominated for the continental awards which saw 184 nominees vie for awards in 22 continental categories.
The award-winning artist said that her Afrima win is but one of the products of her years of hard work and determination. “I believe that it’s good to set your foundation. In my career, I have been preparing for this all my life.”
Award recipients each receive a trophy but Sally couldn’t confirm what other prizes come with the awards. “They (Afrima) are still gonna brief me about my prize, I will only know for sure after two days,” she said.
The award ceremony took place in Lagos, Nigeria.
