African cartoonists unite in freedom of expression

A group of Africa’s editorial cartoonists recently met in Cape Town to connect and talk about the power of cartoons on the continent.

The event was organised by John Curtis, founder of AfriCartoons, a platform that promotes African cartoonists and defends their right to free expression.

“Cartoonists highlight wrongdoing,” says Dudley, The Namibian’s longtime cartoonist who attended the meeting. “The goal is to afflict the comfortable and comfort the afflicted.”

AfriCartoons is the largest archive of African cartoons and has over a million followers on Facebook. It supports over 300 cartoonists from more than 40 African countries.

“It was great meeting the people behind so many cartoons,” Dudley adds. “They’re a brave and committed group.”

Dudley also notes that cartoonists deserve more recognition.

“Their work is not taken seriously, but make no mistake – political cartoons serve important sociopolitical functions in society.”
