Affirmative Repositioning calls independence an ‘incomplete project’

The Affirmative Repositioning (AR) party has called independence an “incomplete project,” given the rates of poverty, inequality and unemployment in the country.

In the AR’s Independence Day message issued on Saturday, member of parliament Job Amupanda said the years since 1990 have been decades of contradictions.

While there has been significant progress over the past 36 years, Amupanda called that progress “a mere drop in the ocean”.

Amupanda stated the mission of his party as: “to complete the incomplete project of liberation and to steer our nation onto an alternative path that resolves the contradictions of the past 36 years.

He said the new society that should have emerged after independence was marred by freedom fighters compromising with former colonisers.

“Post-independence Namibia evolved into a nation of two conflicting facets. On one side, the victorious freedom fighters entered the comfortable corridors of political power. On the other side, the former colonisers secured a deal in which they surrendered only the political institutions in exchange for retaining control over the economic ones,” Amupanda said.

Nevertheless, Amupanda congratulated Namibia on its 36 years of independence and wished all Namibians a happy and reflective Independence Day.
