ACC must take claims of corruption at local authorities seriously – ratepayers in petition

Several ratepayers’ groups handed over a petition to the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) in Windhoek on Monday, saying the commission is ignoring “ordinary citizens”.

Windhoek ratepayers and residents, Gobabis ratepayers and the Right to Shelter organisation, as well as the Okahandja Concerned Group and ratepayers are demanding answers on how the ACC investigates local authorities accused of corruption.

Spokesperson Shaun Gariseb in the petition claims that concerns are ignored, investigations are not making progress, and evidence is being destroyed.

The petition is calling for special investigators to be appointed for local authority matters, as well as for the ACC to confirm whether investigations were initiated regarding previous complaints.

The group also demands updates on the status of investigations and when they would be completed.

The disgruntled ratepayers are threatening a “sit-in” if they do not receive a substantial response on or before 28 February.

“We know and understand your mandate, but it seems you do not appreciate the effect of maladministration on the ordinary citizens of this country,” the petition reads.

It highlights several incidents as examples of investigations with little progress.
