Namibians are in for a treat – albeit spicy – when the new ‘Kapana Spice’ dating show is launched on YouTube under the Elegant TV YouTube channel on Valentine’s Day.
The show was inspired by the Cape Town-based ‘Truth or Drink’ and ‘Hot First We Feast’ shows.
Laudika Hamutenya, the creator and director of the new dating show, says ‘Kapana Spice’ involves strangers quizzing each other.
Throughout the questioning they must each eat a piece of kapana with hot sauces that vary from mild to very hot, while keeping a straight face.
The creators are looking at introducing new segments that go beyond couples, ex-couples and blind dates, but also incorporate ‘friends with benefits’ and family members.
“Even though film-making is my passion, I figured Namibians are looking for content they can relate to, with people who look and speak like them.
“Shows like these are already popular on YouTube, but most importantly, shows like ‘Date My Family’ are all the buzz in Namibia right now.
“So I wanted to create a show that borrows elements from these two shows that inspired me, while also making it as Namibian as possible. Kapana just felt right, and who doesn’t want to see a bunch of strangers asking each other spicy questions while their mouths are on fire?” Hamutenya says.
He says he was not entirely sure where his career would go when he returned to Namibia after completing his studies in Cape Town, so he says he started doing different things to get a foot in the door of the industry.
He joined a small production company, called Elegant Media, and pitched the ‘Kapana Spice’ idea to them after two months, he says.
Hamutenya says the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic has made things hard, but they finally managed to finish shooting all seven episodes of the show this year.
“Each episode will be dropped on YouTube, while all the promotional material for the show will be dropped on our other social media sites, like Instagram, Twitter and TikTok, as well as our parent company, Elegant Media’s Instagram and Facebook accounts.
“From the 14th, we will be dropping one episode every week for the next seven weeks. The first six episodes are all blind dates, however, the final episode will be a special episode where we got a couple asking each other questions to test how well they know each other,” he says.
The show will have two seasons, with the second season being produced while the first one is screened.
