Blake Lively and Anna Kendrick star in ‘;A Simple Favour’; (2018). Paul Feig’;s frothy Melissa McCarthyless neo-noir following ‘;Ghostbusters’;, ‘;Spy’;, ‘;The Heat’; and ‘;Bridesmaids’;.
Zooming in on Kendrick’;s chirpy mommy vlogger who agrees to do the titular simple favour for Lively’;s svelte, gin martini happy publicist, the film based on the Darcey Bell novel of the same name straddles the awkward line between comedy and thriller.
An odd couple outing that works when its trading barbs but pans amidst its lacklustre thrilling by numbers, ‘;A Simple Favour’; is somewhat saved by its leads.
Lively is dark, gorgeous and her wardrobe will make most women swoon while Kendrick’;s particular brand of weird is imbued with something a little tart and disturbing.
Though you’;ll see the twists coming, there is a level of complexity to this unlikely friendship between mothers. One married to a has-been novelist drowning in debt, the other widowed, lonely and narrating all the intrigue via mommy blog.
With a plot too thin to say much about without spoiling, the verdict is ‘;A Simple Favour’; is a watchable basic whodunnit that allows the leads a refreshing take on their established characters.
