A long farewell

MORE than two months after she was killed, the late Sanna Garoës will be laid to rest this weekend at Kalkrand, the Hardap Region village where she grew up and lived before moving to Windhoek.

A memorial service for Garoës was held in the Beth-el Evangelical Lutheran Church in Katutura last night. The service started with a photo of a smiling Garoës, a mother of two who was killed at the age of 36, being carried into the church ahead of a casket containing her remains.Garoës was killed between June 13, when she was last seen in Windhoek, and June 17, when a dissected torso later identified as hers was found in a rubbish bin next to the road between Windhoek and Okahandja.More parts of her body were found discarded next to main roads to the south and east of Windhoek on June 20 and July 11.They were finally identified as belonging to Garoës on July 13.She is believed to be a victim of the B-1 Butcher. For her family – including a 19-year-old daughter and a five-year-old son – a seven-week wait before they could lay her to rest will end this weekend. Her arms, though, have not been found yet, and the search for her killer continues.
