A funeral fit for a hero

ONE of Namibia’s struggle heroes, David Meroro, who died aged 87, is to be buried at the Heroes’ Acre on Saturday.

Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Mocks Shivute, has announced that Government has decided to give Meroro a “Heroes’ Funeral” rather than a State burial. A memorial service will be held at Parliament Gardens from 16h00 today.Meroro died at the weekend after spending three weeks in hospital.Although he was nearly 90 years old, the health of the Swapo stalwart had been compromised by torture and imprisonment during the war for liberation, said Shivute.In a short statement, President Sam Nujoma paid tribute to the late Meroro, as “a distinguished Namibian citizen and founder member of the Swapo Party who led the internal resistance against the racist, colonial and apartheid regime”.A memorial service will be held at Parliament Gardens from 16h00 today.
