RASTAFARI in Windhoek yesterday took the offensive in their fight against the illegality of dagga in Namibia with the formation of the lobby group, Ganja Users Namibia (GUN).
Group spokesperson Brian Jaftha (Bjah) said the group aims to register as a non-profit organisation with the intention of “representing all ganja smokers in the country”.
They are planning a march through the city to hand over a petition to lawmakers in which they will voice their protest against marijuana’s inclusion in a new drugs bill currently being drafted.
The most striking feature of the new bill is a clause stipulating a minimum prison sentence of 20 years for first offenders convicted of drug possession.
“Gun owners are allowed to carry freely and are only arrested when they commit a crime. So why not the same scenario with ganja, which we consider a natural substance?” fellow GUN initiator Kashela Kashela commented.
