720 Windhoek households to receive electricity

The City of Windhoek is at an advanced stage to provide electricity to 720 households at a cost of N$11,4 million, Windhoek mayor Queen Kamati said at a city council meeting on Thursday.

The project is funded by the government, Kamati said.

“When the City of Windhoek council members and senior management held the annual strategy and budget review last month, we specifically identified the electrification projects as priorities, for which I would like to commend all stakeholders involved,” she said.

Kamati said the city is committed to improving the quality of life for every resident, regardless of socio-economic status.

“Access to electricity is not just a commodity; it is a lifeline. It powers our homes, fuels our businesses, lights our streets, and most importantly, it provides hope and opportunity,” Kamati said.

She further said residents of Windhoek’s informal settlements have faced the challenges of darkness for too long and this has not only limited their potential, but also compromised their safety, health and well-being.

Kamati added that the City of Windhoek has a five-year electrification plan that aims to connect about 4 000 homes in informal settlements to the power grid over the next five years, with an annual budget of between N$15 million and N$20 million.
