MANCHESTER – Harriet Harman, the secretary of state for justice, was narrowly elected Sunday as deputy leader of Britain’s governing Labour Party, the party announced.
Labour lawmakers, grassroots members and affiliated trade unions elected Harman, 56, over five other candidates after five close rounds of voting in Manchester, northwest England. In her victory speech, Harman said “It will be an honour and privilege to work alongside Gordon Brown,” who was expected shortly to be elected unopposed as the new Labour leader, three days before he becomes prime minister.Nampa-AFPIn her victory speech, Harman said “It will be an honour and privilege to work alongside Gordon Brown,” who was expected shortly to be elected unopposed as the new Labour leader, three days before he becomes prime minister.Nampa-AFP
