JOHANNESBURG – Informal settlements will be removed or upgraded within 10 years and the current housing subsidy scrapped, Housing Minister Lindiwe Sisulu said in Pretoria on Thursday.
Announcing a new housing policy, Sisulu said: “Informal settlements will either be eradicated or upgraded.” Sisulu said the idea of the new policy was to create “non-racial and sustainable” housing, and homes in which people wanted to live.Currently 2,4 million households dwelt in shacks or “informal structures”.Only 800 000 of these households were on the official waiting list for government subsidised housing. The plan includes revising the subsidy scheme, which divides people into “hardcore poor”, the “poor” and the “affordable”.- Nampa-SapaSisulu said the idea of the new policy was to create “non-racial and sustainable” housing, and homes in which people wanted to live.Currently 2,4 million households dwelt in shacks or “informal structures”.Only 800 000 of these households were on the official waiting list for government subsidised housing. The plan includes revising the subsidy scheme, which divides people into “hardcore poor”, the “poor” and the “affordable”.- Nampa-Sapa
