A REPLICA of the ‘Reiterdenkmal’ equestrian statue was erected at Swakomund’s newest social and culinary hotspot, the Altstadt Restaurant yesterday (on Friday) and is already generating publicity.
The equestrian monument (Reiterdenkmal), also known as the ‘Südwester Reiter’ (Rider of South West), is a statue in Windhoek, erected in 1912, honouring the soldiers and civilians that died on the German side in the Herero and Namaqua War of 1904–1907.
The bronze statue, without its granite pedestal, is currently in storage in the courtyard of the Alte Feste building, where it was moved to in December 2013.
According to Altstadt Restaurant’s Norbert Sadlowski, the replica is about half the size of the original and was constructed by a local artisan who also does work for movie sets. This replica’s height is about two metres.
“Our intention is to try and get all the old stuff here and give it a sort of museum atmosphere. People like to see these things, especially the tourists,” he told
