48 still on the run after mass jailbreak from Wanaheda cells

FORTY-EIGHT of the 61 trial-awaiting detainees who staged a mass break-out from the Wanaheda Police Station holding cells on Friday evening had still not been rearrested by late yesterday afternoon.

According to a Police spokesperson, Chief Inspector Hieronymus Goraseb, 13 of the escapees had been arrested by yesterday afternoon, leaving 48 still on the run. Among the 13 are six who were in custody for what Goraseb termed “serious crimes”; two of them face rape charges.Goraseb did not have the names of the rearrested escapees immediately available, and referred enquiries in that regard to the Wanaheda Police Station. He said assistance from people who had phoned the Police with information about the whereabouts of some of the escapees, had significantly contributed to the successful apprehension of some of the 13.Goraseb appealed to anyone with information on the whereabouts of the other escaped suspects to phone Chief Inspectors Shikongo and Van Zyl at the Wanaheda Police Station, telephone number (061) 209 6111.However, there was no answer at this number when it was dialled numerous times yesterday afternoon. The escape took place at about 23h10 on Friday, when a Policeman who was escorting two arrested men to the Police Station’s holding cells was overpowered after he had unlocked an access door to the cells.Because some of the cell doors had been broken for months already, according to a Police spokesman on Sunday, detainees who had been gathering in a corridor next to the cells took the gap created by the attack on the Policeman and made a run for freedom. The Police have given the names of the escapees who were still on the run before yesterday’s recapture of five suspects as:Joseph Rooinasie Hendrick van Wyk Ikwa Samuel Josef Immanuel Tomas Gariseb Haingura Muronga Lukas Kavita Willem Gariseb Niklaas van Wyk Ruben Iyambo Eliakim Hamukoto Sarel van Schalkwyk David Kamati Simon Swartbooi Given Angula Mervin Frey David Kinda Simon Haufiku Ismael Adams Johannes Angula Silvanus Haikali Petrus Tsarab Christoph Tsarab Ricardo Vlermuis Peneas Waterboer Sox Nawaseb Bucky Olyn van Wyk Sagious Lamberth Ileni Immanuel Petrus Indongo Frans Berendt Leonard Abraham Fillemon Veiyo Indongo Martin Matheus Alfeus David Simon Joseph David Antonius Ambunda Linus Kuduva Dansen Kambetu Larry Malgas Andreas Natangwe Patriot Andima Teofilus Hosea Matheus Simon Chaklas Lipunda Evath Ndakolo Moses David Samuel Gaseb Leevi Iiyambo Samuel Nghinahonde Paulus Matheus Joseph SalmoAmong the 13 are six who were in custody for what Goraseb termed “serious crimes”; two of them face rape charges.Goraseb did not have the names of the rearrested escapees immediately available, and referred enquiries in that regard to the Wanaheda Police Station. The Police have given the names of the escapees who were still on the run before yesterday’s recapture of five suspects as: Joseph Rooinasie Hendrick van Wyk Ikwa Samuel Josef Immanuel Tomas Gariseb Haingura Muronga Lukas Kavita Willem Gariseb Niklaas van Wyk Ruben Iyambo Eliakim Hamukoto Sarel van Schalkwyk David Kamati Simon Swartbooi Given Angula Mervin Frey David Kinda Simon Haufiku Ismael Adams Johannes Angula Silvanus Haikali Petrus Tsarab Christoph Tsarab Ricardo Vlermuis Peneas Waterboer Sox Nawaseb Bucky Olyn van Wyk Sagious Lamberth Ileni Immanuel Petrus Indongo Frans Berendt Leonard Abraham Fillemon Veiyo Indongo Martin Matheus Alfeus David Simon Joseph David Antonius Ambunda Linus Kuduva Dansen Kambetu Larry Malgas Andreas Natangwe Patriot Andima Teofilus Hosea Matheus Simon Chaklas Lipunda Evath Ndakolo Moses David Samuel Gaseb Leevi Iiyambo Samuel Nghinahonde Paulus Matheus Joseph Salmo
