2 Acting Judges return to bench

A VETERAN senior advocate and one of the partners in Namibia’s oldest law firm are two of the latest acting appointments to Namibia’s High Court bench.

The office of the Chief Justice announced late last week that President Hifikepunye Pohamba has appointed lawyers Louis Muller and Hosea Angula as Acting Judges of the High Court with effect from the start of October. Both men have acted as High Court Judges before.Muller is a member of the Society of Advocates of Namibia and has more than three decades of experience in the legal profession.He was first admitted as an attorney in 1973, and has been practising as an advocate since June 1974.He received senior counsel (SC) status in 1987.Muller is a past President of Namibia’s National Olympic Committee.He is currently a panel member of the Court of Arbitration in Sports in Lausanne, Switzerland, and is the President of the Professional Arbitration and Mediation Association of Namibia.Muller’s appointment as Acting Judge comes ten years after he had last served in the same capacity on the High Court bench, where he had been an Acting Judge on various occasions between 1990 and 1995.In the last quarter of 1992 he also served as an Acting Judge of the High Court of South Africa’s Orange Free State division.Angula’s appointment sees him returning to the High Court as Acting Judge for the third consecutive year.His first stint as Acting Judge was in 1996.This was followed by another term in an acting capacity in 1998, and then again in 2003 and 2004.Angula has been practising law since 1985.He has been a partner in Namibia’s oldest law firm, the 86-year-old Lorentz & Bone, since 1987.Both Acting Judges’ terms of office run until the end of November.Both men have acted as High Court Judges before.Muller is a member of the Society of Advocates of Namibia and has more than three decades of experience in the legal profession.He was first admitted as an attorney in 1973, and has been practising as an advocate since June 1974.He received senior counsel (SC) status in 1987.Muller is a past President of Namibia’s National Olympic Committee.He is currently a panel member of the Court of Arbitration in Sports in Lausanne, Switzerland, and is the President of the Professional Arbitration and Mediation Association of Namibia.Muller’s appointment as Acting Judge comes ten years after he had last served in the same capacity on the High Court bench, where he had been an Acting Judge on various occasions between 1990 and 1995.In the last quarter of 1992 he also served as an Acting Judge of the High Court of South Africa’s Orange Free State division.Angula’s appointment sees him returning to the High Court as Acting Judge for the third consecutive year.His first stint as Acting Judge was in 1996.This was followed by another term in an acting capacity in 1998, and then again in 2003 and 2004.Angula has been practising law since 1985.He has been a partner in Namibia’s oldest law firm, the 86-year-old Lorentz & Bone, since 1987.Both Acting Judges’ terms of office run until the end of November.
