Zambia boosts copper output by 40%

LUSAKA – Zambia is confident it will achieve its 2005 target of boosting finished copper production by nearly 40 per cent to 550 000 tonnes despite strikes and accidents, a government official said on Tuesday.

Copper mining firms had presented fresh data to indicate that they would still increase copper output to 550 000 tonnes this year from 397 000 tonnes in 2004, said Felix Mutati, finance and national planning deputy minister. “Our (economic) growth side is looking very positive again.”The mines give us the confidence that they will be able to lift production to 550 000 tonnes this year,” Mutati told Reuters in an interview.-Nampa-Reuters”Our (economic) growth side is looking very positive again.”The mines give us the confidence that they will be able to lift production to 550 000 tonnes this year,” Mutati told Reuters in an interview.-Nampa-Reuters
