Youth Service official arrested for bribery

THE Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) yesterday arrested a senior National Youth Service official for allegedly soliciting a bribe.
The official was arrested during a sting operation by the ACC in Independence Avenue in Windhoek’s central business district.

The arrest attracted crowds of onlookers while the suspect tried to fight off his arresters.ACC Director Paulus Noa told The Namibian that the official had allegedly solicited a bribe of about N$5 000 and was arrested shortly after receiving the money from an insurance company. The Namibian was reliably informed that the official was in charge of procurement at the National Youth Service.It is believed that the NYS insures most of its property with GlenRand short-term insurance brokers. The official allegedly solicited the bribe in exchange for giving them more business. The brokers informed the ACC of the alleged bribe and the ACC gave them money to hand over to the suspect during the sting operation. National Youth Service Commissioner Onesmus Upindi told The Namibian that, although he had been informed of the arrest, he was attending a workshop and would acquaint himself with the case and the charges as soon as he returned to his office.
