Youth march to protest arrest

MEMBERS of the Wisdom Youth Organisation (Wiyo) took the streets on Friday morning as they marched to the Windhoek Magistrate’s Court at Katutura in support of two of their members who were arrested during a march last month.

Last month, Wiyo members camped outside the Wanaheda Police station for two days before undertaking a march to the offices of the Ministry of Youth to hand over a petition. Their progress was cut short by Police, who blocked their path and kept them on the side of Independence Avenue in Katutura for several hours. Two men, Frederik Haixwa and Mwaitoko Abraham, were arrested by police after they were ordered to disperse the crowd. Haixwa and Abraham made their second court appearance on Friday on charges of assaulting police officers. Roughly fifty Wiyo members came out in solidarity of the two men, singing songs and holding posters. The protesters were however prevented from entering the court premises by police, who only allowed one Wiyo member to accompany the two men to the court room.Their case has been postponed to August 11 2011.
