YET another party emerged on Namibia’s political landscape this weekend with the launch of the Christian People’s Organisation (CPO).
The formation of the party makes it the fourth to be formed in the space of two years.
Mathew Veldskoen, interim president of the new party, and a former Swapo Party secretary for Warmbad and UDF candidate for the Karasburg constituency, launched the CPO on Saturday morning, citing a need for ‘total transformation, rebuilding and restoration’ of the country. In a presentation mirroring Martin Luther King Jr’s ‘I have a dream’ speech, Veldskoen relayed his party’s vision to a sparse gathering of family members and media at the Thüringer Hof Hotel.’I have a dream that one day we will be governed by leaders with a vision that will lead this nation to the land of Canaan; of leaders with integrity and transparency, who will cross the borders of racism, discrimination and tribalism; of leaders who become servants, and serve the interests of their nation, and stop looking at ‘what do I get out of this’.’Describing the party as an ‘independent body that is not religion-based but faith-based’ and open ‘to anyone with moral values and ethics,’ he said although Namibia is a secular state, there is a place for the church in politics. The CPO is not yet registered with the Electoral Commission of Namibia (ECN), but Veldskoen told those present that the commission had been informed of the formation of the new party, and that it hoped to be registered by the time of its first congress on August 1.nangula@namibian.com.na
