Xoagub takes NNOC hot seat

THE Namibia National Olympic Committee (NNOC) appointed Abner ‘Big Daddy’ Xoagub as secretary general (SG) at its executive meeting held earlier this month.

NNOC vice president Johan Knoetze confirmed Xoagub’s appointment, saying it was with immediate effect.
Knoetze said Xoagub, who previously served as NNOC SG from 2006 to 2008, was the runner-up for the position of SG from last year’s elective congress.
The SG also serves on the Athletics Interim Committee (IC) established earlier this year to run the affairs of athletics in the country, but which is currently not recognised by the IAAF world athletics body.
The appointment of Xoagub follows the resignation of SG Callie Schafer.
Knoetze said Schafer resigned for personal reasons.
Sources indicated the Schafer called it quits because of a difference in opinion on various matters at the NNOC.
Agnes Tjongarero was re-elected as the president of the NNOC after she successfully fought off challenger Kelly Nghixulifwa earlier this year.
Tjongarero will serve the body for four years after she garnered 19 votes, compared to 10 votes for Nghixulifwa.
