Writing on the wall for Mavara

Writing on the wall for Mavara

OUTSPOKEN Swapo Party Youth League (SPYL) Central Committee member Wensel Mavara was unceremoniously ousted as the youth wing’s Rundu Urban district secretary over the weekend.

Ironically, Mavara was part of a group of SPYL members who tried to get rid of the youth league’s secretary, Dr Elijah Ngurare, slightly more than a week ago, but failed for a second time. The Swapo youth held a district conference at Rundu on Saturday, and Mavara was ousted in his absence.Christine Malwa replaced Mavara as district secretary, while Gabriel Kanyanga was elected as the district mobiliser and Augustinus Kupembona as treasurer. ‘There are some other people behind the move, but for the sake of unity I accept their decision and wanted to congratulate my successor with her work. However, I want to warn the youth that they should not be used by elders who do not have their interest at heart,’ Mavara told The Namibian.Mavara, who stays on as a CC member of the SPYL, said the aim of his ousting was to silence him. ‘They cannot silence the voice of the people. I will still be active on the national level.’According to him he was the person who should have organised the meeting but was only informed of it a day in advance.’How can they tell me through an SMS at night that we have a district conference while I am not in the region?’Mavara is currently based in Swakopmund where he is employed as a game ranger by the Ministry of Environment and Tourism.Mavara will now have to look for another region to nominate and support him for re-election as a CC member of SPYL at their congress scheduled from August 29 to September 2.- Additional reporting by Nampa
