AUSTRALIA’S rugby league players were warned yesterday to stop abusing women or get out of the game, after group sex scandals were exposed on national television.

National Rugby League chief executive David Gallop apologised publicly for what he called the ‘harrowing’ treatment of women described in the ABC’s ‘Four Corners’ investigative programme on Monday night.

NEWCASTLE United manager Alan Shearer praised the ‘courage’ of his players after their morale-boosting 3-1 win over northeast rivals Middlesbrough here at St James’ Park. But he was soon thinking of his team’s final two games which will decide whether they can escape relegation from the Premier League this season.
‘The players must enjoy that winning feeling because they have worked their socks off,’ Shearer said after Monday’s win.

Quick Step cycling team bosses on Sunday urged Tom Boonen to have treatment after his second positive test for cocaine but added they would stand by him while he serves a suspension.
Boonen, Belgium’s top cyclist, is facing up to what could be a premature end to his impressive career after testing positive a second time for cocaine.
Boonen, a 28-year-old one-day specialist who was crowned world champion in 2005, tested positive for cocaine two weeks ago – only a fortnight after winning the prestigious Paris-Roubaix one-day classic for the third time.

Dwayne Smith smashed a brisk 47 and Rohit Sharma grabbed three quick wickets as Deccan Chargers thrashed Rajasthan Royals by 53 runs in an Indian Premier League match here on Monday.
Deccan rode on West Indian Smith’s 32-ball knock to post 166-7 before restricting Rajasthan to 113 for their sixth win in 10 matches. Rajasthan have so far won five of their 11 games. Delhi lead the eight-team competition with 14 points from nine matches, followed by Chennai (13/10), Deccan (12/10), Rajasthan (11/11), Punjab (10/10), Mumbai (9/10), Bangalore (8/10) and Kolkata (3/10).

World number one Rafael Nadal, the 22-year-old Spaniard who has won six Grand Slam tennis titles, might be on the verge of writing a book about his career, Crain’s New York Business reported.
The report said literary agent Larry Kirshbaum has been speaking with publishers about a book from Nadal, an Olympic champion who has overtaken Swiss star Roger Federer for the top spot in the global tennis rankings.
