Where the rubber IS the road

A RUBBER ‘road’ had to be improvised from old tyres along Hercules and Mensa streets in Windhoek’s Dorado Park so that a heavy excavator could be driven across the Acacia bridge.

The machine is too heavy for the tar road and is not allowed to use it, but with the tyres cushioning its weight, it could inch forward slowly. The excavator is being used to prepare the Arebbusch River for the building of a cement canal to prevent flooding of the adjacent Acacia housing development. A ‘stilling basin’ is needed at the end of the channel to reduce the speed of the river. The stilling basin will be built first before NamibBeton starts working on the canal.
